The program is designed for automation of chromosome analysis. It provides acquisition of the metaphase chromosome spreads with b/w digital camera installed on microscope (light or fluorescence), or scanner. The image can also be opened from files in BMP, .PCX, .GIF, .TIF formats or pasted from clipboard.

The program enables to consolidate the acquired spread by moving the separately lying chromosomes, remove artifacts, draw axis and centromeres on the chromosomes, measure them and get data tables, mark chromosome numbers, get karyotypes in manual or automatic mode and make corrections if necessary. For complicated cases there is an option to analyze the chromosome idiograms with a possibility of their editing, averaging and comparing. The original images, karyotypes, tables, idiograms can be printed and used for reports and publications.

Image Analysis System with VisusImage-Karyo software package facilitates the cytogenetic researches making them more effective, up-to-date, and free from routine. The medicine genetics department of the St.Petersburg Academy of postgraduate medicine education (MAPO), prenatal diagnostics laboratory of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Institute named after Prof. Otta (St.Petersburg), molecular genetics laboratory of the Advanced Medicine Technologies Center (St.Petersburg) recommend that the Image Analysis System with VisusImage-Karyo program be used for diagnostics of the complicated cases, archiving and storing information in Image Data Base, facilitation of the communication and data exchange through e-mail and Internet.

VisusImage-Karyo software package is also used for analysis of the animal and plant chromosomes. Among our users are there Research Institute of the livestock genetics and breeding.
